Middle School General Music
The General Music courses will focus on hands-on experience while demanding a more academic understanding of music theory and history. The goal of this approach is to combine growing competence in popular musicianship with both cultural awareness and a more abstract musical literacy.
Grade 6: Music
Students will continue mastering concepts begun in elementary school. Music reading and composition skills will be demonstrated by continued work on piano and percussion instruments. World music will be studied scaffolded upon the knowledge students will gain in Social Studies. Focus will be placed upon the understanding of various styles of drumming traditions.
Grade 7: Music
Building on the sixth grade curriculum, students will continue mastering music reading and composition skills while working on piano technique. Focus will be placed upon the growth and development of music from ancient civilizations to present time and its effect upon popular music genres of today.
Grade 8: Music
Transitioning students to performance based courses of study in high school music classes, graduating eighth graders will work towards musicianship that will allow them to either join performance groups or truly appreciate the endeavors of their classmates. Emphasis will be placed upon the study of American music, more specifically the genres of Ragtime, Blues, and Jazz and their growth and development.
